🥁 About Maxwell
Hi! I’m Maxwell Mandell, a music teacher and multimedia artist with a passion for helping kids connect to music through rhythm. I’ve been teaching music since late 2020 and have led hundreds of one-on-one lessons with students of all ages and learning styles.
My teaching is holistic: we don’t just learn how to keep time or follow sheet music—we explore groove, improvisation, technique, listening skills, and how rhythm fits into the bigger musical picture. I believe drumming should feel expressive and energizing, and I aim to create a supportive space where each student’s unique style can shine.
🪘 Lesson Format
Starting May 2025, all lessons are in-person. I typically travel to the student’s home so families don’t have to worry about the commute. I offer:
- 30-minute lessons
- 45-minute lessons
- 60-minute lessons
I’m currently building my teaching schedule as I transition out of college and into post-grad life, so I appreciate your flexibility as we find a time that works for your family and mine!
💰 Pricing
Because lessons are now in-person and include travel, my rates reflect the time and distance involved. Rates may vary slightly depending on location and lesson length. Here’s a general guide:
- 30 minutes — $130/month (discounted) OR $40 per lesson
- 45 minutes — $170/month (discounted) OR $50 per lesson
- 60 minutes — $215/month (discounted) OR $60 per lesson
Note: Pricing is currently being updated from my previous online lesson model. Please reach out for an accurate quote for your area.

🧠 Teaching Philosophy
I want students to love what they’re doing—plain and simple. Whether they’re jamming to their favorite song, exploring a new rhythm, or composing a beat from scratch, my goal is to build both skill and confidence. Lessons are structured but flexible, giving students the freedom to explore and grow.

Learning the drums builds focus, coordination, and creativity—all while being incredibly fun. Through hands-on, rhythm-based lessons, kids will explore drumming technique, music theory, ear training, and ensemble skills while building their own musical identity.

My drum lessons are packed with interactive exercises, fun challenges, and rhythm games. From recreating beats from their favorite songs to creating their own grooves, kids stay engaged while learning real skills.

Maxwell did an amazing job taking photos of our Exodus dance showcase. Despite the complicated lighting conditions which can be tricky to capture well on camera, his photos came out vibrant and dynamic, with a great selection of poses and shots.

Categorically No! Would I work with Maxwell Mandell again? Emphatically Yes! Would I recommend him to my closest friends? My mother? Another school? Absolutely! Why? In short, because he did a high quality job on time and was a joy to work with. Can you be more specific? Yes. Maxwell Mandell is: Professional: hardworking, on time, communicative, organized… Maxwell kept close track of each suggestion we made (e.g., “As you film and edit, be sure to think like a parent looking for a school. “Will my child be happy here? Will she be motivated to learn?). He kept in close touch. If he needed more footage, he would return to get it — all during the pandemic when everyone needed to be masked, distant, careful. Able to listen to the client: attentive, wheels always turning, responsive, never defensive… I have had collaborative experiences that were excruciating to manage because the videographer always knew better — like a local TV station that produced for us an unusable video. But if Maxwell has a competing idea, he will express it and explain his rationale. Example: I was convinced the video should open and close one way while Maxwell had another idea. I demurred and the final product is appreciably better. Artistic: sensitive, eye for detail, good camera sense. Maxwell sees the whole project through the eyes of the audience. He could mix long shots with close-ups so the viewer did not tire. Much of his artistry came to the surface through his editing and technical work. Technically a wizard — camera work, editor, lighting, color correction, directing…Maxwell took 20+ hours of footage and edited it into a two minute video that was “of a piece.” He corrected lighting such that it was balanced throughout, whether he filmed indoors, outdoors, cloudy, or sunny. He has shooting and editing tricks that make the product flow and effectively told the story of a school that is open during the pandemic. Maxwell’s interpersonal skills helped him connect with adults and children to complete this project. Whenever he had to stage a scene or interview a student, he always did so with respect.
